Pair mats c.1960s
Possibly worked from a pre-transferred design on off-white linen with pre-finished hemstitched edge.
Floral design worked in stem & chain stitch using stranded cotton, 3 strands.
Edge has then been crochet into & finished with treble scallops.
Size 7.25” width x 7.75” length (18.5cm x 19.5cm)

Selection of cotton lace trims all hand stitched
Cotton fabrics range from fine lawn (lower trim) to almost sheeting.
All likely to have been used as insets or edgings.

Tray cloth c.1960s
Possibly worked from an iron-on transfer onto white linen (as design is not perfectly symetrical at either end, it indicates it was ironed onto fabric by stitcher).
Design of Willow Pattern worked predominantly in a variety of straight stitches although a few lines are in chain stitch.
Several shades of blue worked using stranded cotton, 3 strands.
Machine stitched hems folded to the upper, right side.

Runner c.1940s
Possibly worked from a pre-transferred design on beige linen. However, the hem edges have been shaped & bound with bias binding which has been machine stitched (likely to be done by the stitcher).
Floral design worked mainly in buttonhole & chain stitching with straight & stem stitches to resemble buttonhole for larger central flowers.
Other linear work in stem & straight stitching.
Uses stranded cotton, 3 strands.
Max size 11” with x 42.5” length (28cm x 108cm)

Likely worked from a pre-transfered design on pre-edge finished beige linen.

Likely worked from a pre-transfered design on pre-edge finished beige linen (teacosy has been machine neatened to inside).
Mostly stem stitch & running for linear design, chain for leaves & buttonhole for flowers.
2 main neutral colours (red & stone) & 4 main colours (2 shades of each blue, pink, purple, green) use stranded cotton, 3 strands.
Subtle difference to flower middles indicates threads being insufficient & another colour substituted.
Size 15.5” width x 11” length (39cm x 28cm).

Panels c. 1950s
Worked from an iron-on transfer (red outline remains visible) onto remnants of white linen with machine-stitched finished hems (likely by the stitcher).
Mostly stem stitch but ouline of rose petals worked in buttonhole stitch.
Design uses stranded cotton, 6 strands (creates an embossed style to the design). Yellow rose – uses 4 colours; red rose – uses 5 (thread may have been insufficient).

Circular mat - 20th century
Possibly worked direct on off-white wool fabric.
Floral design worked in a variety of straight stitches with a few chain & buttonhole stitches.
All worked in wool yarn in a variety of colours - reverse side is brighter. Edge has first been hand rolled & stitched, then overstitched in 3 rows of stem stitch.
Size circle diameter 10.5” (27cm)
(Likely a mat used for decorative, celebratory or religious purposes)
