Stitched in green & brown wool, the flowers & leaves are in beading.

Circular mat - 20th century

Possibly worked direct on off-white wool fabric.

Floral design worked in a variety of straight stitches with a few chain & buttonhole stitches.

All worked in wool yarn in a variety of colours - reverse side is brighter. Edge has first been hand rolled & stitched, then overstitched in 3 rows of stem stitch.

Size circle diameter 10.5” (27cm)

(Likely a mat used for decorative, celebratory or religious purposes)

Table mat c.1970


Possibly worked direct on off-white linen (woven the width of the mat). Likely made in another country (not UK) for the tourist trade & purchased as a holiday memento.

Geometric design worked in straight stitch ie. patterned darning.

4 colours using cotton – edges frayed to form fringe, then hemstitched.

Size 10.75” width x 19” length (27.5cm x 48cm)

Chair back c.1960


Worked from an iron-on transfer onto beige furnishing fabric (transfer mark still evident along lower scallop base).

Floral design worked in satin & stem stitch.

Multi coloured & uses stranded cotton, 3 strands.

Size 18” width x 24” length (46cm x 61cm)

Tablecloth c.1950


Possibly worked direct on white cotton (eg. sheeting).

A central Chinese Lantern & floral design worked in counted cross stitch with an outline border.

Multi colours using single strand cotton.

Edges covered in bias binding & stitched to front.

Almost square - Size 31” width x 34.5” length (78.5cm x 85cm)

(Maybe made in another country, not UK, for the tourist trade)

Mat c.late 20th century


Possibly worked direct on off-cuts of white cotton. Likely made in another country (not UK) for the tourist trade.

3 strips of fabric have been stitched together & covered with a criss-cross of cross-stitched stripes (only visible on reverse). Simple scenic design worked in counted cross stitch.

Multi colours using single strand cotton.

Edges turned under & buttonhole stitched in place.

Size 11.25” width x 16” length (28.5cm x 40.5cm)
 

Cushion cover (reversible) c.1960




Possibly worked from a transfer on beige linen.

Floral designs (both sides) worked in various straight stitches, chain & french knots & uses stranded cotton, 3 strands.

The seam to join each side has been machine stitched & an opening left for the cushion to be inserted (likely then hand finished).

Circular diameter size 16.5” (42cm)

Tablecloth c.1940

All embroidery completed but outer edge unfinished - perhaps WWII stopped its completion!

Ribbon trim c.1900

Worked on fine wool using stem stitch with buttonhole stitch to lower edge.

Stitched in silk thread - tacked onto backing fabric.

Possibly worked from an iron-on transfer onto beige furnishing fabric. (One of a matching pair which are likely to have been made from a purchased length of fabric. Both have opening at one end, folded with press-studs stitched in place. Possibly made by the stitcher.)

Floral design worked in various running stitch, stem, satin & buttonhole stitch.

Multi coloured & uses stranded cotton, 3 strands.

Fine linen cuff with crochet trim edge that is not inserted in seam regularly.

May have been added later or repaired. Red initials hand stitched at left edge of cuff
